A key step has been taken to affirm the existing joint aspiration to promote equitable access to medicines and other health technologies.
Mr Roland Driece, Director of International Affairs of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Dr Mariângela Batista Galvão Simão, WHO Assistant Director-General, Access to Medicines and Health Products, signed a letter of intent (LoI) at a strategic dialogue between the Netherlands and WHO, on 17 November 2022 at WHO Headquarters, for co-organizing of the 2nd World Local Production Forum (WLPF) in June 2023.
The WLPF is a new WHO initiative and regular global platform for the global community – foremost government leaders, Member States, the industry, technology experts, civil societies, UN agencies, and other stakeholders – to engage in high-level dialogue and collective action to address key challenges, leverage opportunities and shape the direction of sustainable local production of quality health products globally.
High-level delegates from over 100 countries, industry, international organizations, UN agencies and key relevant actors convened at the inaugural WLPF held virtually in 2021 (21-25 June). Key global issues on local production, such as accelerating local production through partnership and collaboration, and building capacity to enhance access to vaccines for COVID-19 and beyond, were topics of discourse.
The 2nd World Local Production Forum will take place in the Netherlands in 2023.
