8 November 2022 Departmental news Reading time: 1 min (399 words)
This Virtual cGMP Training Marathon for Vaccine Manufacturing is the third of its kind to be organized following the inaugural first Virtual CGMP Training back in 2020 (07 September to 30 November) and the second Virtual cGMP Training in 2021 (05 October to 11 November).

This Training Marathon focuses on improving access to safe and quality assured vaccines by supporting the good understanding of basic and advanced WHO GMP standards and therefore improving cGMP compliance in the most needed Member States.

More than 1200 participants from multiple Member States attended the first day and will be receiving a set of virtual lectures till December 1st to fully benefit from the different topics that are interconnected.

Then for the second part of the Training Marathon, 40 participants will be selected to undergo a practical, and hands-on workshop on real-life case studies, based on CAPA and QRM tools (e.g., Fish Bone Diagram and FMEA). The case studies are related to the knowledge gained in the lectures of the GMP Training Marathon.

The Local Production & Assistance Unit (LPA) has created this line of Training Marathons to support Member States in strengthening local vaccine manufacturers, prospective vaccine manufacturers and National Regulatory Agencies (NRAs) to improve sustainable and timely access of quality assured vaccines in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), and thereby contribute to the achievement of WHO triple billion targets embodied in the WHO GPW13.

In line with the WHO GPW13, the Local Production & Assistance Unit (LPA) with the intermediary of the cGMP Training Marathon is achieving the following objectives:

  • To reduce the risk of producing poor quality vaccines by vaccine manufacturers as a result of insufficient technical skills to achieve cGMP sustainable compliance.
  • To support NRAs by providing support in developing sound cGMP criteria to be applied during regulatory inspections, thus reducing the risk of poor-quality vaccines produced by local vaccine manufacturers.
  • To design and implement an innovative virtual cGMP training marathon that gives useful Quality Management System tools to benefits many LMICs.

To contribute to build the needed technical cGMP and Quality Management System skills of manufacturers and regulators toward the production of quality-assured vaccines to respond to COVID-19 outbreaks and prepare for future pandemics.
